I was so excited to find this Casserole Carrier tutorial at 2 Little Hooligans - I'd never seen anything like it. Toting a hot dish has never looked so good.
I made two changes to the 2 Little Hooligans tutorial to make my carriers:
- There are two main pieces to the carrier. One short, wide piece to go around the width of your casserole dish and one long, skinny piece to wrap around the length. I increased the longer piece to 40 inches to accommodate a Pyrex dish (you need extra length to wrap around the Pyrex handles).
- Instead of sewing fabric straps I used cotton belting. The 82 inch piece of belting was sewn into a continuous loop and attached the same way I make my Spring Totes.
If you have a stylish carrier, you need a cute dish to go with it. I used my faithful Silhouette to cut vinyl and etch the glass with family names.
Have you ever etched glass before? It is so easy! You apply a template, literally glop the etching cream on, wait a while, and wash it off. That's it. I can see myself getting a little crazy with the etching.
So there you have it ... another Christmas gift recorded. More to come next week!

My brother is soon getting married and I now know a perfect gift for his new bride!
Absolutely terrific!!
Fabulous! What a comeback you're making, girl. Love it!
If you're ever looking for a give-away idea, I'd sure love to win something as cute and practical as a casserole cover. What lucky recipients of all your creative Christmas gift-giving. Can I join your family? LOL!
These look fantastic!! I have had this project bookmarked but need to bump it up on my list!!
I might have to make one of these for my mom for her birthday...
Did you etch a Pyrex dish? I saw on the Armour Etch website that it wouldn't work very well, but yours turned out so nicely!
Yes, I did etch a Pyrex. I did it on the side instead of the bottom and left the cream on for a good 20-25 minutes (the instructions say to only do about 5). It worked really well!
What a great gift idea! I need to remember this for my in-laws next Christmas! And I love your fabric choices!
Your site is so inspiring... and it gets me into trouble... I keep adding to my "I would like to make this someday" list. I finally started a blog so I would finish some of those half-done projects, *I hope.* But a casserole cover is a great idea, and I don't have one, so maybe that will be next!
I have a "real" Pyrex brand tote. It comes with a hot pack and an ice pack so that you can keep whatever you're toting warm or cold. I am seriously considering switching the tote out for one of these cute things--they look adorable!
Whoever is receiving this is going to love it!
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS!
I wanted to make an etched Pyrex and a carrier for a friends bridal shower in February but I couldn't find a tutorial that I liked. THANK YOU for posting this! I am making this (with some cute potholders!) as a bridal shower gift! yay!
This is fantastic. I need to add this to my gift list for my friend's wedding! Thanks for sharing!

I bought some etching cream, and am now waiting for access to some electronic cutter. After seeing all the silhouette and cricut projects around, my exacto-knife is really unappealing. :)
I don't really do pot-lucks (I'm afraid to cook for other people. I'm a terrible cook.) but this would be great for an impromptu picnic dinner in the park for our fam.
Yay! I am so excited to make some of these! And, I got a Silhouette so the etching will be a breeze! Thanks so much, Jill!!!
These are so cute! How much fabric did you need for each, without the handles. I'm wondering if I could do it with just 1 yard.
Hi!
I just found your site because someone linked to your maternity DIYs for me as I'm now pregnant and was asking for tips on DIY maternity items on our site. I love your tutorials and love your site in general! I've added you to our blogroll and am excited to share the links to your maternity projects with our readers in an upcoming post I'm putting together.
Keep up the wonderful work! S.
Do you have a tutorial on the etching? I have never seen that before! I am going to have to do some research. Great news for my customers waiting on quilts! hahahaha.
I LOVE this! I was just thinking about doing the same thing for a friend! Thanks for the inspiration!!!
Kate
i love it! i would be so happy to receive a gift like that!
Those are fabulous! I could definitely use one of those!
Oh, my sewing machine could never handle all of those layers... perhaps it's time for a new machine?
You picked gorgeous fabrics--I'll bet they were a hit with the gift receivers!
You know yarn is my first and greatest love but seriously, all the silhouette-y goodness is making me drool for one...these look great and I can't wait to see what else you've been up to!
hmmm, so little sister...how do I put an order in for one of these sets? :) totally fun, great job!
what a brilliant idea! I'm cataloging this for December :)
Question: What Amy Butler fabric did you use? I looked for it because it is, ummmm beautiful, and I would like to make once in this fabric for ME :)
Also, did you make the spoon holder on yours?
The addition of the velcro is a great idea! My mom had one of these back in the 80's and as I was carrying it and happily swinging it back and forth (I think I was only 7 or 8), the casserole dish went flying out the end and shattered in a million pieces! In retrospect, it was pretty funny, but my mom was not too happy with me that day! :)
Thanks for sharing your changes. I've had that tutorial saved and I love that you used belting. I'm totally copying that. And thanks for the pyrex length tip too.
Sooo cute!
Good Idea. Loved it!
You are amazing!! That looks so perfect , just from a "homeware" shop!!! Congrats and keep creating and enchanting the blogger world!
they look beautiful! thanks for giving my tute a shot, but i may be a bit jealous as yours are cuter than mine:) love the idea of the personalized casserole dish inside!
My MIL made me one of these a year ago and I love it! I've used it to take cinnamon rolls to a breakfast, taquitos to a party, and lots more. I never thought of it as a wedding present, what a great idea.
Well I will def have to put this on my to-do list for when all my friends catch up with a husband and kids and host something that I can bring a casserole to. I loved the etched pyrex as well! My maiden name is Maddox, and although I love my new last name, Maddox will forever be special to me (I actually gave it to my son for his middle name, so it lives on!). Anyhow, gorgeous work as usual. Hopefully, I can make one for my Mother-in-law in England!
Love it!
i love this! i am about to start making one tonight!
I would love to know where you bought your fabric for the first featured casserole carrier (the red flowers with green lining). btw, so smart and creative to use a different color for the liner - it makes it so sleek and gorgeous.
i look forward to buying more fabric for the upcoming projects. :)
tiff - the red floral fabric is a home decor fabric from JoAnn's. I haven't been able to find it online.
hope that helps!
Hello - I so love all your projects. My question might have gotten buried, but do you know what Amy Butler fabric thought it was so classy and beautiful, and would love to use it. No biggie but if you knew that would be great! THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR US!!!!
Heather
Hi Heather -
The Amy Butler fabric is called Starflower Tiles from the Nigella line. It seems pretty hard to find these days, but here is a fabric shop on etsy that has 1 yard left:

I just discovered your blog. I love it. Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful projects. I'm new to the sewing world. I'll def give some of these a try.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking the time to find it for me!
Heather
That is awesome! I've been meaning to make one but keep forgetting, thanks for the reminder :).
OMG! This is so fabulous! I'm so excited, im putting this on my to do list with my new machine! :)Perhaps it's not a beginners project but its on the list any how!
I made one of these too. It's funny when I was making it my mom suggested I use the belting for my handles but I didn't, of course (even at 31 who listens to their mom) ha. ha.
I wish I had seen your modifications before I made mine. I'm new to sewing and was afraid to deviate from the original instructions but wanted to use a Pyrex dish for mine.
Love your blog and the carriers. You can see my carrier here:

I featured this today! Hooray! Swing by! :)

How funny to see this post today. I just finished the casserole carrier from "One Yard Wonders" - I much prefer this pattern as it doesn't involve bias tape! Can't wait to try it! Thanks for sharing!
I made one!! What a fun easy pattern! Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for the ideas/instructions!
I made two! http://homeinthecountry.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/casserole-carrier/
I'm making a list of things I want to make on my blog and I'm going to link to this tutorial. Thanks!
How much fabric did you buy for a
9x13 pan?

We've shared a link to your awesome tutorial from WeAllSew.com, and would also like to link to your photo of the finished project so our readers can see for themselves. If you'd rather not that we add your photo please let me know, thanks! -Erika
I'm making these this year for Christmas gifts, thank you for thinking of using belting for the handles! Now I just have to go shopping for fabric!
I just finished three of the casserole totes for Christmas presents. I love the changes you made to 2littlehooligans tutorial and applied it to my own. Great job, and thank you for your post! I linked you both on my new blog :)
This is awesome! I featured it in my "Gifts for Women" post this week. :)
Aloha,
Charlie
Hi what font did you use on your casserole dishes? Thanks!
Thank you so much for the instructions, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your creativity! gigglebox220@yahoo.com
Thanks for the great inspiration and instructions for the belting as handles. I used ballet elastic to hold a serving utensil instead of making a fabric strap: http://www.ushadesigns.com/2012/03/finding-ideas-on-web.html
Love the belting straps--thanks for the tips there (and on the sizing!) I've made three of these now, and linked to you each time! LOVE your fabric choices, too. Here's my latest--with a pocket for an ice or hot pack!
http://bethbeingcrafty.blogspot.com/2012/06/hotcold-pack-pocket-for-insulated.html
these look great and I can't wait to see what else you've been up to!, Send gifts to Pakistan from UK.
I am making this for all the women in my family for christmas! Thank you!
Love this idea! & thanks for letting us know the measurements for a pyrex dish, but how much fabric did you use altogether?
Is there any way you can post the tutorial for this project please? 2littlehooligans cannot be pulled up on the web......Thanks!
i just wanted to stop over to say hello and thank you for inspiring a new project that I posted about today....I used straps kinda similar to your casserole carrier but a different layout!
thanks for inspiring!!
happy day to you!

hi there. great idea on different handle. what size width did you use?
Hi Jill
Another idea to go along with Crafty Beth's suggestion of hot/cold packs, is my husband cut pieces of 1/4" masonite or hardboard to fit in the bottom (where Beth left hers open for packs) to stiffen the bottom. That way it can be removed for washing. Love your idea of using webbing for the strapping. Also used scraps to make pockets for the outside to hold serving utensils and recipe cards. Love your idea of etching names etc on dishes....makes it easier to return to rightful owners.
Love this, can't wait to make it! Also, I have done a lot of glass etching projects. Glass etching cream is very pricey and most people don't know that it can be used again and again. So don't just wash off the cream when you're doing your project... scoop it up and put it back in the bottle!!
